NIH BenchworkSoBran Bioscience currently provides management, staffing and research support for the NIAID Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB) animal program. This large animal program encompasses five facilities on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD, two facilities in Rockville, MD, and research support at one facility located at the NIH Animal Center in Dickerson, MD.

National Institutes of Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Research Center; VRC

Animal Husbandry and Research Support Services

In addition to comprehensive animal husbandry and cage wash services, SoBran Bioscience provides management and oversight, veterinary technical personnel that perform technical procedures, animal treatments, maintain rodent breeder colonies, and provide animal health surveillance that includes an in-house sentinel program, animal sample transportation, and communication between the veterinarian and the scientific staff on animal health issues.  Research specialists provide support to the VRC Laboratory Animal Medicine (LAM) section, the VRC ACUC, and the VRC BSL3 Core Virology Laboratory.

SoBran staff members provide research assistance and technical procedures for work performed on and offsite, including injections, phlebotomy, tissue and organ harvesting, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, ELISA assay, in-situ hybridization, Western blotting, digital imaging processing, and a variety of other specialized services.  Technical and husbandry personnel are experienced in providing quality care and offer technical proficiency for animal species such as mice and guinea pigs and NHPs. Animal Husbandry and Research Support Services

The Division of Veterinary Resources; DVR-Bethesda facilities vary in size, support requirements, complexity, animal species, and ABSL level, requiring diverse staff qualifications and comprehensive support services such as management and supervisory personnel, veterinarians, cage wash technicians, animal husbandry and technical staff, intensive care unit support, breeder technicians, rodent quarantine management, global import/export of transgenic animals, administrative support (both facility and IACUC program coordination), receiving and logistics.

SoBran currently provides support to the DVR, which operates a large, full-service centralized animal care program providing professional and technical services to NIH intramural scientists. The Bethesda, MD DVR facilities include 13 buildings on the NIH campus with a total of 300,000 gross square feet of animal housing and laboratory space. DVR Bethesda houses approximately 100,000 animals, including rodents, rabbits, NHPs, carnivores (dogs and cats), and ungulates. The NHLBI, Division of Intramural Research; DIR supports major research efforts which include programs of basic laboratory and clinical research in heart, blood vessel and lung diseases, blood diseases and development of technologies related to cardiovascular, pulmonary and hematologic disorders. SoBran Bioscience staff support the NHLBI animal research program at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. SoBran personnel manage and supervise support services including:

Animal Care and Research Support

The scientists of NIAMS, as their mission, conduct innovative basic and translational research relevant to the causes, treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases. The NIAMS, Laboratory Animal Care and Use Section ( LACU ), Office of Science and Technology, Intramural Research Program (IRP) has the responsibility for the provision of appropriate, high quality animals and supportive animal resources to NIAMS researchers. Species include primarily mice, but also rats and occasional rabbits and fish. SoBran Bioscience staff provide management and research support including the following:

Reproductive Toxicology Facilities, Veterinary Services

The EPA / NHEERL is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The NHEERL is the focal point for toxicological, clinical, epidemiological, ecological and biogeographic research within the EPA. The animal resources program consists of several facilities that house rodents, rabbits, fish and frogs.

The WRAIR/NMRC Division of Veterinary Medicine encompasses two facilities that vary in size, support requirements, complexity, animal species, and ABSL level.  Supporting the facilities requires diverse staff qualifications and comprehensive services such as management and supervisory personnel, cage wash, animal husbandry and technical staff, receiving, and logistics.

SoBran Bioscience provides animal husbandry, technical support, and management oversight for two large laboratory animal facilities. The two facilities comprise 150,000 square feet of supported area including 33,000 square feet of animal holding area. Species included mice, rats, guinea pigs, sand rats, other rodents, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, swine, and non- human primates. SoBran provides support and operations for the following:

The VSMB is comprised of multiple research facilities that vary in size, support requirements, complexity and animal species.
